Urban & Hejduk strengthens its team for expert on international disputes

Urban & Hejduk law firm strengthens its team for an experienced attorney Rene Cienciala who specialises in complex dispute resolution, including international commercial, investor-state, and sports arbitration. Rene previously worked as a senior associate in one of the leading Czech-Slovak law firm and nowadays moves to Urban & Hejduk as a new head of the firm’s dynamically expanding international practice.

Marek Hejduk, co-founding partner of Urban & Hejduk law firm, comments: “Rene’s arrival is an important step in developing our international practice. He joins our team as a very talented professional having locally unique experience in representation of clients in legally or technically demanding disputes with a foreign element. We already have many significant mandates in this area that we want to expand further, including through our exclusive presence in the swiftly growing Grimaldi Alliance.”

In his career, Rene Cienciala provides comprehensive legal advice to Czech and foreign clients in all stages of court proceedings as well as in domestic and international commercial arbitration (ICC, LCIA, or UNCITRAL). He has equally acted as counsel in numerous cases before the Czech Arbitration Court. He assists clients in preparing structured arbitration clauses, setting aside domestic arbitral awards, or recognizing and enforcing foreign judgments and foreign arbitral awards in the Czech Republic. He likewise has an extensive experience in sports law as arbitrator before the Czech Football Association (FACR) and as counsel in international sports arbitration (CAS) or international disciplinary proceedings (UEFA). Furthermore, he specialises in protection of foreign direct investments and has acted as local counsel in investor-state arbitration (ICSID). Besides the foregoing, he is active as arbitrator and in various professional associations; e.g., as Secretary of the Commission on International Arbitration of the ICC Czech Republic. He is also among the few Czechs who have earned the leading Geneva LL.M. in International Dispute Settlement (MIDS).

Urban & Hejduk law firm was established in January 2015. Its steadily growing team currently consists of 18 lawyers. Since the beginning, the dispute resolution practice has been one of the firm’s leading specialisations that nowadays represents clients in more than 200 cases. The firm is a founding member of the Central European Collegium alliance and has become the exclusive representative of the Czech Republic in the Grimaldi Alliance, international alliance of independent law firms, since the beginning of 2020.
